It owes its name to Re Manfredi who
founded it in 1256 to relocate survivors of Sipontum
destroyed by the earthquake of 1223.
He wants the legend that Manfredi reached Siponto found the

such squalor and decided to build a new city to 2 miles east
of Siponto where the air was healthy and better living

Del glorious past Manfredonia retains Angioino-Svevo Castle,
a mighty towers quadrilateral from internal and external

Aragonese. Currently home to the Archaeological Museum with
the largest existing collection of Stele Daune, sepulchral
symbols dating back to VII and VII AC
Of the old Sipontum remain, a few kilometers from the city,
many archaeological finds and the beautiful Basilica of St.
Mary Major Siponto jewel of Romanesque-Pugliese.
Manfredonia prospered until the fifteenth, resisting raids
and looting. In 1620 it was occupied, looted and burnt by
the Turks. Of Angevin plant were only part of the old walls
and gates (still visible today) and the Castle. The
cathedral was completely destroyed and rebuilt in the next
century.
To visit: The Castle with the collection of Daune Stele, the
Cathedral, the church of Santa Chiara and dedicated to St.
Benedict, the former town hall convent of San Domenico, the
Basilica of Santa Maria di Siponto, the complex of San
Leonardo Volara Lama.
Festive events: the Carnival Dauno, the festival dedicated
to Our Lady of Siponto 29 to August 31 and September 1 of
the characteristic sea procession of St. Andrew, on 21 June
of the summer solstice in the Basilica of San Leonardo.
